Read MoreWishing the Wetpixel community the happiest of years for 2021. I think it is fair to say that most of us will not look back on 2020 with a great deal of fondness, but perhaps we should try to dwell on the positive parts of the year. I suspect that we are all looking forward to a return to some degree of normality in 2021. So, I hope that over the next year, I have the opportunity to dive and create imagery with as many of you as possible and to chat about issues of common interests and concern on the Wetpixel forums. May 2021 provide us with a “new start” and an opportunity to use our skills to capture the marvel and wonder of the world’s oceans, seas, lakes, and rivers.

I don’t normally ask for favors when posting about celebrations, but may I humbly request that you take a moment to review UNESCO’s Charter for Ocean Decade Champions in Image-making. 2021 to 2030 has been declared as the “Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development,” and if you plan to make New Year’s resolutions, perhaps this is a good moment to ensure that our impact is a positive one?

Press release

Nauticam NA-C500II Housing for Canon EOS C500 Mark II and Canon EOS C300 Mark III

The Canon EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III are Canon’s latest addition to their robust and expansive digital cinema lineup. 12G-SDI output and internal Cinema RAW Light recording separate these cameras from entry-level cinema cameras. Both models also utilize Canon’s Dual Pixel Autofocus technology that we have come to love.

The choice of both full frame (C500 Mark II) and super 35 (C300 Mark III) sensor cameras that work in the same housing provide incredible flexibility. Whether you need extra resolution, higher frame rates, or access to a wider range of lenses, you can now choose the best tool for any given project. The Nauticam NA-C500II housing offers unparalleled access to both cameras resulting in one of the most ergonomic cinema housings to date.

The NA-C500II Housing – Now Shipping

Taking advantage of the small form factor of the C500 Mark II and the C300 Mark III, the Nauticam NA-C500II is ultra-portable yet offers full access to the camera’s critical functions.

To take this a step further, Nauticam has also integrated the Nauticam to Canon SDK Control Board which places a variety of electronic control functions at your finger tips for the best ergonomic experience.

Nauticam has taken a modular approach to this system, similar to that of the DCS housings for RED and ARRI cameras with a wide variety of add-ons from top-handles to skids and movable trim weights.

The housing supports the Canon LM-V2 4.3″ LCD monitor in the rear of the housing for a more streamlined approach or you can add on a supported SDI or HDMI external monitor through one of the six M16 bulkheads.

Wetpixel Live

Wetpixel Live is celebrating its six-monthly anniversary. Serendipitously, it was born out of a conversation between Alex Mustard and Adam Hanlon in which we were chatting about the effects we were both experiencing due to the travel restriction caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now with 120 episodes, we conceived it as a series of conversations, each considering a subject of common interest, often derived from threads on the Wetpixel forum or other media. It sets out to answer frequently asked questions and to highlight new ideas, technology, and environmental issues.

Wetpixel Live lives on its own channel on YouTube, which now has over 900 subscribers and has attracted over 45,500 individual views. Each episode is also cross-posted onto Wetpixel’s Facebook Page and onto the Wetpixel forums. The episodes will always remain free to view on YouTube, but we are also offering the opportunity to purchase downloads to suit situations when internet connection may be limited.

To celebrate the six month anniversary, it is perhaps apposite to highlight the top 5 episodes (in terms of viewer numbers) produced thus far. We anticipate that these viewer numbers are likely to change over time as people discover the channel.

In number one slot is our first episode, in which we discuss our “Top 5 Tips for starting out as an Underwater Photographer”:

Number two is a our episode highlighting Alex’s gear choices:

In the number three slot is a technical discussion of the pros and cons of TTL and manual flash control:

Alex and Adam’s discussion of the types of macro close-up lenses that underwater photographers should be considering comes in at fourth place:

And our fifth place episode is a chat about the types of diffusers that are available for flash guns, what they do and when to use them:

To see more and to get answers to many of the commonly (and not so commonly) answered equations posed by underwater photographers, please browse the episodes and subscribe to Wetpixel Live.
