Discovery Passage Underwater Photography Shootout

The inaugural Discovery Passage Underwater photography Shootout is being held this year from Feb 15 to April 15 2021

This shootout is brought to you by Eiko Jones and Roger McDonell (Dive Campbell River)

Photographers of all experience levels are welcome to submit images.

All images need to have been shot within the bounds of Discovery Passage and in the last three years.

The purpose of this is to highlight local diving in the Campbell River region and to offer a competition that is solely focused on cold water diving.

Due to Covid-19, we do not want to be promoting unnecessary travel this year so are only promoting people to come and shoot during this time if they are from the immediate vicinity. In future years we aim to make it a destination shootout, along the lines of the Monterey Bay Shootout, where everyone gathers together at a similar time to “shoot it out”

We have an esteemed panel of three international judges. David Salvatori, Richard Salas, and Doug Perrine.

There will be one Grand Prize Winner, and prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in three categories-

Wide angle, Macro, and Compact Camera.

Entry fees to the shootout will be $10 for a maximum of ten entries over any categories.

Read MoreIkelite is shipping their trademark ABS housing for the Nikon Z5 mirrorless camera. It ships with a manual strobe trigger and a vacuum bulkhead. It uses Ikelite’s 200DL port system.

The 200DL housing for the Nikon Z5 is shipping now, priced at $1,695.

From Ikelite’s website

200DL Underwater Housing for Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Digital Cameras

Product # 71067

$ 1,695.00

A full-featured and durable waterproof housing for Nikon Z5 mirrorless digital cameras. Suitable for scuba, snorkel, surf, pool, and any application in or around the water.

This housing requires the addition of a compatible DL Lens Port for waterproof operation. Lens Port not included.

View the DL Port Chart for Nikon Z Mount…

Nikon Z5 Mirrorless Camera

Nikon’s entry-level Z5 camera is the most affordable stair step from DSLR to full frame mirrorless. It features the Z lens mount for use with Nikon’s newest line of lenses and also accepts an FTZ adapter to be used with legacy FX and DX lenses.

With a 24-megapixel full frame CMOS sensor and in-body 5-axis image stabilization, the Z5 is capable of stunning high-resolution imaging.

The Z5 captures UHD 4K 30p video with a 1.7X crop or HD 1080 video with no crop. The camera battery life is a respectable 470 shots per charge (CIPA rating) when using the rear LCD, which is better than the camera’s higher-end siblings.

Lens Ports

This housing features our robust Dry Lock (DL) port system. “Dry Lock” refers to the placement of the o-ring on the outside of the port mount. This improves visibility and reduces the chances of water dropping onto your precious camera sensor. DL ports are the lightest on the market, yet robust and capable of standing up to rough surf. Attachment is quick and secure. A system of extensions can accommodate a huge variety of lenses with ease.

Most popular zoom lenses and select lens focus rings can be engaged using simple gearing that puts adjustment right at your fingertips. A large, soft-touch knob on the side of the housing makes fine-tuned adjustments a breeze. Zoom and focus gears differ depending on which lens you are using. Zoom gears sold separately.

Vacuum System

The included vacuum valve allows you to pressurize the housing to check for leaks prior to putting your expensive equipment in the water. Use of the vacuum valve requires a compatible Vacuum Pump with Gauge # 47011, sold separately.

There is no greater assurance than being able to see your camera and o-ring seal through the back of the housing. Our signature open-groove design suspends the rear o-ring in a natural position that is easier to maintain and more reliable than forcing the o-ring into a channel. Once the housing is closed you can see the o-ring form a solid, waterproof seal.

M16 Accessory Port

The spare M16 threaded accessory port provides an attachment point for third party accessories including HDMI bulkheads.

TTL Exposure

This housing supports your choice of shooting manual strobes or adding TTL electronics depending on your application. The included manual hotshoe with Ikelite ICS-5 bulkhead supports manual strobe exposure with a wide variety of strobes including Ikelite, SEA&SEA, INON, and others.

You can enjoy the fastest and most accurate TTL exposure on the market by adding the DL1 DS Link TTL Converter # 46056 and a compatible Ikelite DS strobe. The DL1 supports rear curtain synchronization and exposure compensation can be added or subtracted in the camera.

Controls and Set-Up

Shutter and AF-ON levers stand out with super sensitive and natural feeling curved levers. Both controls can be extended using the optional Trigger Extension # 4077.95 for more comfortable use when using a right-hand quick release handle.

All push-button controls are machined and hard anodized aluminum to reduce weight and resist salt build-up. The back of the housing is laser engraved with control symbols that will never fade or fall off.

The camera mount is front-loading for easy installation and removal. A small mounting plate attaches to the bottom of the camera and secures in the front of the housing. The camera mounting plate does not need to be removed from the camera for surface use or when changing the battery or memory cards. The mounting plate features a 1/4-20 threaded mount on the bottom so that it can be attached to a tripod on the surface.

Viewfinders

The included Super-Eye Viewfinder provides an enhanced view of the camera’s optical viewfinder when viewed through a dive mask. The viewfinder removes quickly and easily for the attachment of an optional Straight Magnified Viewfinder (Type 2) # 6890.1 or 45? Magnified Viewfinder (Type 3) # 6891.3. The angle of a 45o viewfinder is more ergonomic when shooting underwater plus it provides a larger and brighter view than the standard Super-Eye.

Handling & Travel

The housing, tray, and handles have been optimized to reduce weight while maintaining strength and durability. The Right-Hand Quick Release Handle # 4077.02 (sold separately) can be added or removed depending on your needs. The precision-machined aluminum base features 1/4-20 tripod mounting sockets and additional mounting locations for future accessories. The base and handle can be quickly removed when breaking down your system for travel.

A 1/4-20 threaded mounting point is located front and center on the housing above the lens port mount. This mount can be used to attach lightweight accessories like a focus light or GoPro camera.

If you’re shooting with two strobe or lighting arms, then a top handle can be added to carry to and from the dive site. Top handles are available in a Cable Grip # 4080.09 or Aluminum Top to Handle # 4080.08. The rigid aluminum version provides additional mounting points for lighting and accessories.

Adding a dedicated focus light to your top mount or strobe arm is highly recommended for more accurate autofocus in low light settings.

Construction

Our new ABS-PC blend front is durable, provides improved contrast and visibility, keeps your camera running cooler in the sun, and is significantly lighter weight than aluminum alternatives.

Every housing is made in the USA, individually inspected for fit, and water pressure tested to 200 feet (60m).

Non-Ikelite Strobes

SEA&SEA, INON, and Retra strobes with an electrical connection can be triggered in manual exposure modes using an electrical sync cord. Strobes without an electrical sync cord connection cannot be attached to this system unless slaved off of a hard-wired strobe.

Ikelite Non-Digital Strobes

Older non-digital strobes featuring an ICS-5 electrical sync cord bulkhead can be used with this system in manual exposure modes.

Fiber Optic

Fiber optic only strobes are not compatible with this installation. An external strobe must be connected by an electrical sync cord.

Remote Triggering

Strobes with remote slave capabilities may be triggered off of a flash attached to the housing by an electrical sync cord. Ikelite DS strobes support remote triggering using the Optical Slave Converter # 4405 or the Water Wizard system (manufactured and sold by Aquatica).

Compatibility

This housing is only compatible with Nikon Z5 cameras as shipped by the manufacturer. Unless otherwise noted, this housing does not accommodate the use of add-on grips, battery grips, eyepieces, LCD covers, or other accessories.

Differences in lens and control placement prevent other camera models from being used in or adapted to this housing. We are not aware of any other models which may be used in or adapted to this particular housing.

Read MoreMonsterAdapter has announced their LA-FE1 adapter that provides electronic AF and aperture support with Nikon AF-I, AF-S, and AF-P lenses on newer Sony Alpha series E mount cameras. The adaptor does not support AF with screw-drive lenses (like the Tokina 10-17mm or converted Nikonos RS 13mm) but does work with teleconverters.

International pricing and availability are to be confirmed.

From MonsterAdapter’s Facebook Page

We, the MonsterAdapter Team, on Feb 4 2021 proudly announced our new product LA-FE1, the Nikon F Mount to Sony E mount electronic adapter!

You may not know that behind the scenes, we actually developed the world’s first such Nikon-to-Sony electronic adapter which has been brought to the market under other names and now it finally returns to our MonsterAdapter brand and has been greatly improved both in the firmware and hardware.

Main Features of the MonsterAdapter LA-FE1:

AF capable with Nikon AF-I, AF-S, AF-P lenses. MF only with screw drive and MF lenses;
2.Automatically recognizing and supporting both the electromagnetic and mechanic-lever controlled aperture;
Supporting human/animal eye AF if the body is capable;
Supporting high-speed continuous shooting up to 10fps if the body is capable;
Supporting the lens’ VR function and its co-working with the body’s 5-axis stabilization;
Designed with detachable tripod mount;
Supporting F mount tele-converters;
Easy upgrading of firmware by simply connecting the camera body and computer with USB cable.

LA-FE1 brings multiple AF advantages from Sony E bodies to Nikon F lenses, including hundreds of AF points across the frame, human/animal eye focus, real time AF tracking and AE in continuous shooting mode, etc.

LA-FE1 is equipped with high-speed aperture motor and can automatically recognize and support electromagnetic and mechanic lever controlled aperture of Nikon F mount lenses.
The lenses’ VR can be activated by the half-pressed shutter button and can be working well along with Sony bodies’ 5-axis stabilization.

The adapter is designed with the tripod mount, which is detachable and easy to carry. More tripod mount options for various uses will be available in the future as per the demands of our customers.

The LA-FE1 can work normally with a7r4 and a6600 even the bodies have the latest firmware installed.

They identify a growing use of underwater cameras in media and entertainment, camera rental services, growth in aquatic sports, and underwater photography’s growth on social media feeds. Seacam has released a new carrying system. It comprises paracord lanyards with tack hook connections and stainless steel connections that attach to the central bolt on arm clamps.

This gives the option of attaching the lanyard on the housing to arm connection, when using a macro lens and shorter arms for example. If longer arms are used, the connectors can be moved to the arm to arm connection, allowing for a more comfortable carrying position.

The lanyards are adjustable for length, and are available unblock or silver. Seacam point out that the paracord has a breaking strength of over 1 ton, so it should be strong enough to support the weight of most peoples’ housings!

Please contact Seacam or your local dealer for pricing and availability information.
